How to Calculate Salary to Hourly
No black box: here are the exact formulas this site uses, worked examples you can check on paper, and the adjustments for time off, part-time work and overtime.
Step 1: Work out your annual hours
Every conversion starts with one number β how many hours you are paid for in a year:
Annual hours = hours per week Γ weeks per year = 40 Γ 52 = 2,080 hours
2,080 is the standard US full-time year used by employers and government agencies. Work part-time or seasonally? Substitute your own figures β 30 hours Γ 50 weeks is 1,500 hours, and that is the denominator you should use.
Step 2: Salary β hourly
Hourly rate = annual salary Γ· annual hours
Example β $75,000 salary: $75,000 Γ· 2,080 = $36.06 an hour. From the hourly rate everything else follows: a day is 8 hours ($288.46), a week is 40 ($1,442.31), bi-weekly pay is 80 hours ($2,884.62), and a month is the annual figure Γ· 12 ($6,250.00).
Step 3: Hourly β salary
Annual salary = hourly rate Γ hours per week Γ paid weeks per year
Example β $25 an hour: $25 Γ 40 Γ 52 = $52,000 a year. Note βpaid weeksβ: if you are paid for all 52 weeks, use 52. If 2 of your weeks off are unpaid, use 50 β and the answer drops to $50,000.
Step 4: Adjust for time off β the part most calculators skip
Paid time off (PTO): your salary and your hourly rate do not change, but your effective rate β pay per hour actually worked β goes up. On $75,000 with 2 weeks of PTO you work 2,000 hours for $75,000, an effective $37.50 an hour.
Unpaid leave: the rate stays $36.06, but you are paid for fewer weeks, so the year's gross falls to $72,115 for the same $75,000 headline salary. This is why two β$75,000 jobsβ β or two β$25/hr jobsβ β can genuinely pay different amounts across a year.
Step 5: Overtime (time and a half)
Most US hourly employees who are βnon-exemptβ under the Fair Labor Standards Act must be paid at least 1.5Γ their regular rate for hours beyond 40 in a workweek. At a $36.06 base rate, an overtime hour pays $54.09. Salaried-exempt employees generally have no legal right to overtime, which is worth weighing when a salaried role expects regular 50-hour weeks: 50 hours every week turns that $75,000 salary into an effective $28.85 an hour on a straight-time basis. Try it in the calculator by changing hours per week to 50.
Gross is not take-home
All of the above is gross pay. What reaches your bank account is reduced by Social Security and Medicare (FICA), federal and state income tax, and deductions like health insurance and retirement contributions. Our salary to hourly with taxes explainer shows how each layer works, in general terms β an exact take-home figure needs a full paycheck calculation with your personal allowances and deductions, which a conversion chart cannot honestly give you.
